Day 25 - 7/20/24
We allowed ourselves to sleep in just a little this morning. Being Saturday we expected more boats to come in, but to our delight almost everyone left leaving about half the boats then the day before.
The kids made fresh blueberry pancakes and then we went exploring the rocks between north and south Benjamin islands. So cool. Dirt must accumulate over many years in the natural potholes on the rocks. Then moss grows in (they look like tribbles from Star Trek). Then trees. But because the trees have such shallow roots they fall over leaving bare pink rock among the weather worn rock. The kids had so much fun jumping up and down and finding new formations.
We returned to relax during a little rain.
We then decided to hike North Benjamin island (the day before we were on South). This has to be the most bush wacking hike of my life. And there were spiders everywhere. No trail, just finding our way to the top. We tried at least. Got as high as we could before there was no way to go without 30 foot drops. The kids scrambled up some pretty big climbs. Kona even had a hard time and we had to adjust our climbs to her. We didn’t find the geological marker but we were proud enough and headed back down. Both Danica and I received a little sting from a nettle right at the end. That sting hurt no ill effect after 5 minutes.
It was just about time for dinner already and we enjoyed eating on deck and watching otters swim nearby! First otter spotting.
Then off to shore with our new friends for more campfires and music. The other boat had kids aboard and it has been the greatest joy to watch them all become friends while scavenging blueberries, making their own fires and making popcorn over their own fire. They picked a much better spot for theirs and enjoyed a mosquito free evening while us on the beach were getting eaten alive.
Oh, I cannot forget to mention…they have maple syrup marshmallows here. The kids are insisting we buy tons. Did I mention MAPLE SYRUP MARSHMELLOWS? I can not express how excited the kids are about this.
The Benjamin’s did not disappoint. They are well known, I half expected them not to live up to their hype, but our visit here has been beyond pleasant and we plan on making another stop here as there is much yet to enjoy. But alas, we need water and our holding tanks are over a week in so we need of a pump out and water. The kids are excited to walk off the boat to land so we headed to bed and will head out in the morning. Kona beat us. We may have tired her out.
