Day 35 - 7/30/24
We had been expecting rain all day. Around 6am we were woken by it and had to quickly get up to shut the hatches and portholes. Not in hurry to do much we went back to bed. When we awoke around 9am it really looked like whatever rain we were going to get was done. I wasn’t really wanting to sit all day and roast and we decided to haul the anchor and move on. Expecting a large weed ball as we had others pull them up here we placed Bert on the dingy as Cory, Danica and I haul. We all got lucky and only had weeds on the chain and it came up easily. The Canadian Geese joyfully gathered around and collected the fresh pickings we threw back into the water.
The kids and all wanted to go to the little town of Killarney which is only 5 miles as the crow flies but over 20nm by sea as we have to go all the way out the fjord and back almost the same distance.
There was little to no wind and a bit overcast so we motored and I was unable to capture the beauty of the trip, but the same old “it was beautiful” applies.
Once out of the Fjord I was able to get cell service only to find out we couldn’t get a slip in the town today. I scanned the charts as best as I could but really couldn’t find a place close to town (that is marked on active captain or the charts). The closest we could find was a place on my list called Covered Portage. It’s about 2nm from the town and is another very protected anchorage surrounded by towering cliffs. Unsure if we could go all the way in by the depth charts we opted for the alternative anchorage right out side which is still quite lovely.
It must be the middle of summer because the last few days have been HOT and calm. Not wanting to do much get cool we jumped in the water and swam for about an hour. Richard even cleaned the sides of Ciara a little bit. Being on the boat this long is creating an even longer wish list of repairs and upgrades we want to do this winter. At least she is being sailed and lived on….
We took Kona to shore while the kid’s prepared Taco Tuesday! Took the dingy all the way in the anchorage to check it out and asked folks what depths they saw on their way in. We think we can make it in here next time, but as always, post a bow watch as we could clearly see the hidden rocks (with white fiber glass scratch’s all over it) at the entrance.
Dinner and trumpet and then the kids wanted to watch a movie so we did that and called it a night. A pretty calm day at sea. All the rain predicted for the day and night never happened.
