Provisioning - Part two
The last two days have been a complete whirlwind. I wasn’t going to “log” about home life however I noticed two things this weekend amongst all the chaos. There is stuff going on here at home that pertains to Ciara and how we make things work on a classic sailboat. And then there is this void in my life where I miss writing. That latter point was a bit shocking to realize. “Number Deb” went and peaked at the bottom left of my word screen to see that I have written over 45 pages. The practice of putting words to paper has not only proven to show that a little goes a long way but has been changing my mindset. I am much more aware to remember things, much more aware to observe things. This has led to an underlying happiness. I thought maybe it was just sailing but as we have been home, working hard, my spirits are up and I know this is part of it.
I did want to fill in a bit of the important and fun details of the last two days though!
Boat wise, we made a major Costco and grocery run. Captain fixed my scooter! We got some meds for poison ivy; I forgot to mention Captain did end up with an extra souvenir from High Island a few weeks ago! I still wonder why, after all these years, it has yet to give me a rash. I was walking through the same stuff as him with less protection. I re-printed our “10 Ship Commandments” as I have made typing errors that have brought to my attention. We got our safety jack lines. Captain made and ordered boat stickers! We have wanted to have some “merch” to share for so long. Hopefully those will be ready before we leave tomorrow or we will pick up next week. We brought wine/beer/good cheese to share. I spent more hours than I’d like to admit with the re-provisioning. There is a lot of good news here. 1. I can laugh at myself. 2. Nothing I prepared will be wasted as the food has very long shelf life and is food we eat as a family year-round. 3. The lessons I learned from this year will be clearly seen with my excel sheet and the tracking of our actual use. 4. If we wanted to sail, family of 5, to Europe and back…twice, I think we could make it on my provisioning. 6. Somehow Ciara will magically swallow all this on top of all the provisioning we took on round one!
Home wise, we made a nice dinner for Morrigan and Cory on Thursday. Steak, potatoes and asparagus. Friday we were to have dinner with Captain’s family. We bought some lamb chops from Costco and about 5 minutes after we got home, we found out half of guests couldn’t come. Captain had, of course, overbought as it was so we invited my friend Erin and our sailing friend Brett over for dinner. Captain outdid himself. I feel very obligated to post pictures of this meal. Cory was great and walked extra food down to our missing guest, grandma, with our well wishes. Hopefully will see Ursula soon and hope she feels better. We had a lovely night hanging out with Erin and Brett. Erin had her puppy vizsla so even Kona got to hang out with friends. We saw my parents for dinner on Saturday when Bert and Dani joined us as well. Really hard to see them all for the first time in four weeks and trying to catch up over dinner at once. Didn’t matter, I was happy to see and hug them all. Mom made beef stroganoff that had me coming back for multiple servings. Dani returned back to dads after dinner, grateful they had some sort of “get out of dishes card.” Dani will stay one more week at home with dad before they go off to their own camp. Bert is off to his first music camp tomorrow with Cory. I am more excited than I let on.
Late last night I was trying to get Captain to come to bed. He had been seduced by Kona on the living room rug. Eventually he found the will to get up and when Kona arose, she had left a print of herself on the carpet. Captain went to get the Roomba. Earlier in the day, in my provisioning fever, I staged everything in our music room, which is also where the Roomba lives. You can see by the pictures why the first lesson above is about laughing at myself. There is a ridiculous number of things. I had even noticed that I boxed the Roomba in a corner and thought it would be ok for the night. From upstairs I heard a very large thump. I thought he fell down the stairs and as I ran out of our room, I could not see him on said stairs. Cory heard it as well and we quickly went down to find him with his feet in the air, holding the Roomba in one hand in the air and his head wedged between one of our pianos and an old floor radio. Richard was stuck but seemed good so I quickly moved things out of the way to bring his feet down and help rescue him. He sat up and was feeling his head as he did hit it. We quickly went into triage mode to make sure we are actually ok. As he let down his glorious hair out of his hair tie his hands were covered in blood! With Cory there, and the fact that Captain was calm and aware, the first thing I said was “head wounds bleed. A lot. More than you think it should.” I kept repeating that as we quickly tried to control the situation. We applied pressure and after a few moments got Captain up and in a chair. I eventually got him to let me try and look at it but by then the hair had already started to mat, and yeah, that is painful. I told him he had to let me nurse him or we were going to have to go to the ER to let someone look at it. My heart fluttered for a moment as I watched his face drop as he said “they will shave my hair.” That was enough for him to let me try. I grabbed some towels and put his head over the kitchen sink and gently tried to wash away the blood and loosen the hair so I could see if we were making a trip to the ER or not. I could tell the bleeding had pretty much already stopped by that point and the matted hair quickly loosened for me to get a look at the wound. Just under the mark for requirements for stiches. Yay! He will have a little scar. But it will be under all that fabulous hair and Captain Jack Sparrow can sail another day!
The weather forecast continues to not be great next week. I am hoping we get out for a quick overnight on Ciara amongst a few at the marina. No worries though, I have made touristy plans at the last minute and I’m very excited, so stay tuned!
