A recovery day
Today was, indeed, very relaxing. We allowed ourselves to sleep in with no agenda. It had been an eventful few days before and we deserved it. I had my normal tippy-tap-tap time and Captain made some breakfast for us after Kona went to shore. We raised our chair hammock up the jib halyard and I read in there for a while; Captain finished his book in the cockpit. I got word that our friends Kim and Hobert (who we met at the Turnbull’s and briefly saw in Killarney) were coming into the Pool today along with Vicky and Gary on their boat who they were traveling with. We watched almost all the sailboats leave and gradually fill in with powerboats. Today was a holiday up here, so even though it was Monday there was still a holiday atmosphere. By 2pm they still hadn’t arrived and the heat was making me sleepy so I laid down for a short nap. Captain and Cory followed suit.
Around 3:30 I was back up and hot and grumpy and we all decided we would hike back to Lake Topaz and take a dip in the clear waters. There had been multiple dinghies at shore all day indicating that the lake was getting lots of visitors but as the day drew on they were lessening. We packed our bags once again and went hiking. The 20-minute hike felt much harder then yesterday with the heat but we made it and made haste to change and get in. I still didn’t jump, but Captain did. We were fortunate to have the entire lake to ourselves for about half an hour before a few others showed up. Kona was having mild heart attacks because all three of us were in the water and she was on shore with no one to throw a stick for her. We convinced her, multiple times, to jump in to us. We played a little stick keep away and since she had her life jacket on we let her tow us in a conga line back to shore a few times. My knee felt much better in the water today and I was feeling hopeful that a little bit of healing everyday was working.
The group that joined us kept to themselves a bit further down shore. They obviously knew the lake and were jumping off the really high cliffs where we have never seen folks jump. Probably about 30 feet up! One kid, maybe 8 or 9 years old, would scramble up the rocks like spiderman and jump non-stop. That mom must have learned a long time ago he wasn’t going to give her heart attacks.
We headed back to Ciara around 6pm. We took our dinghy through the anchorage to see around the corner if our friends had finally come in. There was only one new sailboat and it was Vicky and Gary. We stopped to chat and found out that Kim and Hobert had a really bad day. While sailing down the fjord his prop shaft came loose. He was able to pull into another anchorage and drop anchor. Seemed secure for the moment but they were unable to get back to him as the winds had really picked up and they needed to get into the Pool. They have a big issue to look at in the next day or so. If that prop comes out it will sink the ship….fast. I told Captain if that ever happened to us we would have a night watch for sure. I also asked him if that could happen to us and he assured me the way Ciara is designed our shaft can’t work it’s way out.
We invited Gary and Vicki over later, they remembered I had Bloody Mary’s and were unable to sample them at the Turnbull’s. We came back and made pulled pork BBQ for a simple dinner on deck. I was just finishing dishes around 8pm when they came over. I poured them some drinks while I finished up my chores. Vicky brought gifts of Canadian Pickles (oh good, Captain and Cory were almost out!) and a beautiful jar of cooked beets. We will have to wait until we get home to enjoy those as the jar is large and fridge space is limited.
I played Last Post at 9pm. I made a massive error in the middle. I don’t even know what happened. I just got lost in the music in my head and all the sudden the wrong notes were coming out. I recovered and finished, red in the face and embarrassed. Most folks probably didn’t notice and I “sounded amazing” according to Captain. Cory giggled and said I recovered really well. It didn’t sit well with me. Trumpet trauma.
We said our goodnights to our friends and took to Kona to shore quickly since we didn’t get that done. The mosquitos have been merciful and not too bad thanks to the good breeze. We finished the night again cuddled down in the salon watching Rick and Morty as a family and eating the large loads of snacks that we still haven’t opened on board. We plan on moving tomorrow, not far, down the fjord to another popular anchorage that has a really nice hike next to it.
