Beer Fairy
We stayed in bed and cuddled to 10am. That was really nice. By the time my blog was written and bacon was eaten we were packing to go for a little adventure. We pulled the scooters out of the pilot house and called Tinkerbell, the shuttle, to come pick us up and take us across the bay. We scootered over to the Killarney Mountain Lodge to check out the worlds largest Paddle lovingly named the Big Dipper. It pays tribute to the early explorers and traders that made this entire area home. We found raspberry bushes and made sure we had a good forage! I really like the raspberries!
We then scootered to the lighthouse. We spent sometime on the pink granite stones just soaking up the breeze and beautiful scenery. When we finally got to the lighthouse we saw two sailboats way off in the distance. One was not like the other. It was much larger and had square rigging. It was Playfair! Christine (the captain) had texted me the day before and told me they were coming this way. I had mis-read her text and thought they were going to the Pool today and as I re-read the text I realized they were coming to Killarney today and the Pool tomorrow (just like us!). We sat on the rocks and watched them come all the way to the head of the channel. Captain yelled so hard that he tasted blood “Ahoy, Playfair!” There was a delay as the crew scrambled to the horn but sure enough, we got a return call! The kids (we would find out later) asked the captain “do you know someone here??” She figured it must have been us.
We got back on our scooters to head back into town and welcome them in. We made it back in time to see them sailing down the channel!!! We grabbed Kona from Ciara and welcomed them in. They are docked just across the way from us. We bid Christine hello and said we would meet up later after they all got settled and then we went to go get some ice cream :D We really liked this raspberry drink that we got at the LCBO so we went back and got some more of those. We then went back to the Killarney Mountain lodge to find Red, the harbor master. We had some Wisconsin beers for him as well as a crew shirt. He has been so helpful to us in the past three years and we wanted to give him some swag. He was very excited for the beer and his first crew shirt of the year.
It was already dinner time by the time we got back to Ciara. Kona got hers and a walk with frisbee time before we left. Just as we were loading the dinghy I noticed the clouds looked ominous so we went back and closed all the windows.
We went just across the channel to the Sportsman’s Inn Pub for dinner. Captain and I got what I am now calling our “Canadian dinner” of Cesar Salad and Poutine (this time it was loaded with bacon and more!). Cory modified theirs for a Cesar Chicken wrap. While at dinner a lady that looked familiar came in. She looked at us, did a double take and said “It IS you! I saw your boat and Hobart said it wasn’t your boat! I was right!” We were anchored with them at the Turnbulls. We had a good laugh at how small Ciara looks against other sailboats as our rigging is much lower the modern day boats. She also thanked us for the WI beers we had snuck onto their dinghy early in the morning before we left all those weeks ago.
The rain came down just as dinner was finishing. We found ourselves waiting on the porch to clear because even though we shut the windows on Ciara none of us had brought rain gear for ourselves. Eventually it died down and Captain took Cory down to the lodge so they could download more movies and also do some free laundry for us. I waited at the Sportsman because Christine had texted me saying we should grab drinks together for the evening. She met up with me before Captain returned and we headed back inside. She got a little dinner while I ordered a margarita. Being Captain of a summer camp for kids, she got a kiddie cocktail.
Captain came back and had two beers in his pocket for her as well. She will have to secretly stow those and enjoy back home this fall.
We closed the bar down after midnight. The time went so fast. We learned more about her ship and responsibilities. We shared photos and stories. I was able to send her all the drone footage on the amazing Wi-Fi while we chatted.
Eventually we had to go get Cory so we said our good-nights. They are going to the Pool tomorrow with us and we are so excited! It will be neat to see Playfair off the docks and watch the crew of kids at work as we sail alongside them.
The carosel at the Killarney closes at 1am so after we said hi to Cory and confirmed they weren’t ready to go and wanted a virgin Mojito we went to see if we missed last call. We did but the manager looked over at us and gave permission for us to have one last drink. He came over and Captain asked him if he liked the beers we gave him last year. He smiled and said “Ah, yes! I saw you and thought you were one of the locals, but now I remember!” We enjoyed our one drink and Captain took me back to Ciara while he grabbed a few more beers for him as well!
While Captain went back, one more time, to get Cory and be the beer fairy I walked Kona. Poor girl didn’t get a lot of people time. I had our big flashlight and was scanning the woods religiously for bears while she sniffed out a spot to go potty. I was giving her extra time to poop when (after 1am!) someone started to set off fireworks right across the channel! It spooked us both. Poor Kona. I had to call her back and collar her back to the boat because she started freaking out and I didn’t want her running off a pier or into the woods.
When Captain got back he asked if Trump died, hence the fireworks. We all quickly checked our phones to see. Nope, false alarm. But we had a good laugh. Finally in bed around 2am! That was a long day but so fun. Playfair said they aren’t leaving until at least 10am so at least we don’t need to be up at dawn!
