I jinxed myself
We had a pretty simple day today. The weather was supposed to be crappy so I awoke to plans of being lazy and hoping to catch up on some quiet time since this week has been crazy busy fast in the best way possible. We took Kona to shore and had a pretty normal morning. We had a zoom call with our friends in Quebec and sadly it was decided they weren’t going to be able to join us later this week. The fires had compromised the roads (or should I say, “one road” to Little Current from Quebec) and they felt it was best to not be stuck on one side or the other of blocked traffic. We can’t blame them and decided we would just have to see each other this winter as we miss each other very much.
It had rained all night and was suppose to rain all day but the weather man was wrong. We had good wind, but tucked nicely in our anchorage we were all very comfortable. It was dry, however, so around noon the flotilla of dinghy’s were off again on another adventure exploring McGregor Bay. This time we did a round trip through the channels. We found this large smooth granite rock about three city blocks long. That is where we had our mid-day picnic. Not the best swimming hole for the kids, but Kona didn’t seem to mind and even though we were on a large rock, she still managed to find a stick and do her thing. The rest of the dinghy ride was beautiful. The channel coming back down was much narrower than the main channel. According to the charts we could get Ciara way up into most of that channel and drop anchor in one of the many little side channels/pools.
By the time we got back to the anchorage it was time to start making dinner. We all decided to share dinners again so we went and prepared one of our favorite meals, Shepard’s Pie, to bring along. I made a large bottle of Cherry-tini’s to share. Lucia made the most amazing pork butt and Arabesque made pasta and meatloaf. We all enjoyed our food very much and acknowledged how different our skills were based on our boat. They loved the freeze-dried meals and we marveled at the creations they could make with ovens aboard!
Captain and I went back to Ciara around 8:15pm to gather Kona for her final walk and to play Last Post. The place we have been taking Kona to potty here is also a large granite rock. The landing is a bit tricky and because rocks get very slippery when wet and submerged (algae!) one must be cautious when disembarking. Captain is at the motor and it is my job to get off and bring the boat securely to shore. Tonight we “bottomed” out the dinghy a little deep and as I had one leg over the dinghy trying to reach and twist my body for the ground, I felt a sharp pain in my inner knee. I instinctively came back in the boat immediately and started to nurse my knee. It really hurt but I figured it was just a moment of pain and I would shake it off. Kona did her business and we went back to Ciara. My knee was not going to bounce back as fast as I hoped so I grabbed my knee compression sock that I keep because sometimes I do tweak my knees and like the extra support for a day or two to remind me to not push it.
I played Last Post and because of last night’s encore everyone started to chant “encore” again. Being our last night together as a group (Arabesque has to start heading back to the USA tomorrow, so sad) I came back and played Taps. I think I made Julian cry. We have all become so close in just five days.
We returned to Arabesque for night caps. Dave and Lori from the other sail boat here (also from the same marina as Lucia) came over and we enjoyed getting to meet them and hanging out.
If you know me, being a short person, I hardly ever sit like a lady. I normally find myself sitting on my legs or crisscross applesauce. I noticed that if I even tried to think about moving my knee I was greeted with severe pain. Everyone noticed I was wearing a brace but I kept my poker face to how bad things were. I just wanted to enjoy this last evening with everyone.
We didn’t stay up too late. Our hosts had a long sail day ahead of them. Lucia and ourselves were planning on seeing how we felt in the morning. Maybe stay here, maybe head to Killarney or closer into a new anchorage.
Back at Ciara I hobbled over to bed and found I really couldn’t twist my knee at all without severe pain. I took some meds and gingerly went to bed. Wincing in pain every time I attempted to move and get comfortable. I had hoped this would be nothing; I went to bed pretty sure I wasn’t going to be so lucky. I jinxed it. I had said and thought many times this summer “Cory and Captain are all beat up (bug bites, poison ivy, possible broken shin, etc) and I was just doing fine, hardly a bite or bruise on me. I felt I was going to get it worse and now I’m here with a possible injury that is much greater. Once I got comfortable and stopped moving, I feel asleep immediately, tired from another full and amazing day and sad that I was in pain.
