Day 15 - 7/10/24
Richard and I were excited to spend today taking Cory all over the places we scoped out yesterday but somehow we weren’t really on our way until 11am. Sleeping in and long beach walks morning beach walks with Kona will do that.
We stopped at the Heritage Village and read about the half of dozen buildings they had on site. Very cool.
We then headed to Mackinaw City for lunch which was really good. I had an amazing burger and it was a treat to have a meal on land.
When we left lunch we looked over at the marina and could see a boat we recognized! So we walked over to see it up close and maybe say hi to the owners. Sure enough it was the boat Tiger. (Sadly here I confess that both Richard and I struggle to remember names on the first go-but we don’t forget the boat names). We sailed along her in 2022 and then anchored next to her for a few days in Traverse Bay (where the picture provided was taken). We were just admiring her from the dock. She is an 80’ all aluminum long range cruiser. She is all business and about a perfect example of a boat that I would feel very safe crossing oceans in. The owners came out and chatted with us and remembered us. I may have embarrassed myself when I couldn’t contain my excitement when they invited us aboard. I have now stepped on a 6 million dollar personal yacht. It’s just perfect. It even had an engine room and was build like a warship.
After that we felt we needed a treat so Cory got some boba tea and I got some ice cream.
The heat was starting to come in and we wanted to start back to the boat. We stopped at a beautiful lighthouse and toured it. Wonderful history and never had fell into disrepair. Took a short hike down to the shore to see the Mighty Mac and a rock that has historically been used to see lake levels. It appears the lake is up a bit which confirms what we have been seeing on the charts vs our depth gauge.
Finally got back to Ciara around 4 and just beat a small rain which broke the heat. Richard and I took a short siesta and then took Kona to shore to swim with us. It felt amazing. Had to keep her on leash which not actively fetching as there were others enjoying the beach and we didn't want her bothering them to say hi.
We cleaned up deck and the dinghy while Kona supervised and enjoyed a dinner of leftovers while we watched the most beautiful sunset. We had hopped to maybe see the green flash but a freighter way off in the distance eclipsed the sun exactly at the right moment. We laughed.
Today ends “leg one” of our journey. 15 days with Cory while we made our way to St. Ignace, MI. So much more to come
