Day 39 - 8/3/24

8/3/24 - Day 39

1st mates log

We started today with freshly made cinnamon rolls from the rifle club. Last week they were given to us and we wanted more! We were also able to give a donation this time to such a good cause.

We all then walked over to the Anchor Inn for Roy’s 9am radio show. There was a full house on attendance today After three weeks we feel like family in the boating community. I’m sure it ebbs and flows and when we return there will be many new faces, but I suspect we will remember quite a few as well.

Roy interviewed Bert on the radio. He thought it would nice for other boaters to hear about a kids experience. He did well and made us all chuckle a few times. The last question Roy asked was if Bert had any advice for boaters up here and his answer was “watch out for spiders!”

I had not slept well the night before so I went back to take a little nap while Richard went to take a tour of the local Masonic lodge with Roy.

We finally got the boat off the dock, fueled and pumped out around 1pm and made our way to Hotham.

We finally got some wind! And it felt great. We were able to sail about 1/3 of it but then we had to go directly into the wind and being a narrow space between islands and an eta that that was dragging further and further back we dropped sails and motors. The winds picked up to over 20! We are still amazed that 20 doesn’t feel as bad up here as it does down in MI/WI because of all the protection.

We pulled into our anchorage around 5:30pm. We had been here very early on our trip and were invited back by Norm and Elaine since we were unable to be social the first time around. There were lots of boats here and social hour at their house was well under way. Kona was eager to go to shore as well so we quickly went over and met everyone while the kids got started on dinner. It was so very nice to meet them and all the boaters who happened to be here. Even another couple from Sturgeon Bay (it’s a small world).

Dinner was delicious and Taps/Last post well received, with again, everyone now expecting the 9pm call.

We warded off the mosquitos and headed to bed. The heat continues to wear us out but I think we may be getting some reprieve soon. I hope!!
