Day 37 - 8/1/24
I awoke with a craving for real eggs and no one complained when I offered shore breakfast. We eat really well aboard, but sometimes it’s nice to eat out. After nearly 3 weeks with all the kids last nights dinner and today’s breakfast are the only times we have eaten out. I devoured my breakfast as did everyone else. Kona isn’t the only one who has lost weight on this trip. It isn’t intentional, but apparently activity is up and just not eating as much due to more controlled boat rations works.
As we walked back from breakfast we ran in Red Proulx, the harbor master who was able to secure our morning ball. He recognized us as he had see our boat in Covered Portage and watched the kids pull anchor. I asked him if he was related to the Proulx who was the original lighthouse keeper and yes, it was his great grand father. I hear the marina would fall apart without his great work and I can attest, the entire operation was flawless. So many places up here we have met multiple generation families and honestly I can see why people come and stay. (Although the winters here must be an entirely different story).
We need to start moving west towards home today. Thankfully the winds and weather look like we won’t have hard weather to fight on our way back so I’m not as stressed as I could be for our timeline. In fact there is NO WIND . It makes for beautiful glass water motoring but not great sailors.
We dropped the ball and headed out of Killarney around 11am. Mike Cooney had invited us to drop anchor at Haywood island where he was and to officially meet him. Just about 20nm and we set anchor and immediately jumped in the water and away from then heat. The water here is so pleasant! Richard, Kona and I swam over to Mike’s boat where we could stand and hung out in the water with him for hours. Kona could swim to shore from where we were but she spent the majority of the time swimming. I have never seen her swim so much, and she was exhausted by days end. We throughly enjoyed our chat with with Mike and when we returned to our boat it was dinner time. With that long swim and slightly cooler evening I wasn’t hot for the rest of the day. Ahhhh!
All of us spent the late afternoon just playing fun songs, hanging out, talking and laughing.
Taps/Last post was especially haunting (in a good way). The echo here was so intense. I have to admit, I have greatly enjoyed playing in the most magnificent concert halls in the world here.
We heard clapping and cheering from out of sight as there are a few anchorages around this island so I was heard from pretty far. Richard and I took Kona for her night walk and went to explore a little. Absolutely calm night on glass we glided around the bay until we came upon a boat named “Living the Dream.” Rob had first met us at the pool and then we saw them at Killarney, saw them motor past us out of Killarney and now here. We chatted for a while and invited him over to enjoy our last can of Wisconsin Beer. It was really nice to end the day chatting with him and learning more about this area, its people and life.
