Preparing for foul weather
Today was quiet and pretty uneventful. We spent a good portion of our morning setting up the boat for incoming weather that was to start in the afternoon and carry through to Thursday afternoon. Captain had made a wind scoop this winter for our V-Berth hatch. It was an unexpected project and one he took great joy in. A wind scoop helps pull the wind (or breeze) down into the boat and creates an almost a/c effect, something we would really like to have when it gets hotter as well as to be able to keep the hatch open in rain and keep fresh air flowing in the boat. Sadly, the design is acting too much like a sail and we were unable to effectively tie it down or modify it. We hope to make some adjustments to it when we head home for our quick turn arounds, or bring the sewing machine back up here.
We rigged our cockpit tarp. This tarp makes us look a little homeless but it does the job of covering the companionway so we can get in and out of Ciara when it is raining without getting rain inside and also lets us stand up deck dry. It also acts like a sun shade on hot days. We took some bungee cord tent poles we had bought three years ago and finally tried to increase the head room. Shockingly these worked really nice! Captain is thrilled to have functional headspace now. With the poles ready to test through this storm we may finally have a functional design in mind to make a custom canvas that we have been dreaming of for years.
With Ciara all tidied up we took Kona to shore for a walk before the rains set in. We spent the afternoon watching a sailboat come in, chilling out (surfing a little too much internet with coverage here) and napping.
Captain wanted to make steaks again so we found a break in the rain and had a nice drizzle walk to the grocery store to make a repeat dinner of the night before. It was around 8pm so I determined this would be Kona’s last walk for the evening as well. We ended up eating pretty late and I wasn’t in the mood to do dishes and said I would get them tomorrow. I completely forgot Taps in the rain. Instead, we enjoyed time by lantern light and good music before calling it a night.
