New Brace, more rest

I slept pretty well last night. That little extra cushion on the brace made for a nice upgrade.

Captain was eager to get up and off the boat as we had a plan for the morning.  We hobbled over to town and planted ourselves in between the Marina office and the Post Office.  With both in sight we sat and waited until my emails started coming in saying that my packages were about to be delivered.  The good news was I was getting two, which means they were going to attempt to deliver the first one again and we knew both braces were in the same van.  Sure enough, around 9:30 a white van pulled into the marina office parking lot.  Captain took off intercept the truck while I waited with baited breathe.  He emerged a few minutes later with two packages in hand!  I took of my Frankin-brace and put one of the new ones on immediately.  It sure is smaller than my old one and in some ways more comfortable but the jury is out if it is as nice. I can feel my knee moving in it more.  In the irony department my right arm is now hurting from using my cane too hard.

The rest of the day is quite a bore. I managed to get a shower and Captain and Cory did a large laundry run.  Captain took the skateboard and came back with Tim Horton Donuts as well as special bottle of Tylenol with the pharmacists blessing. I took a nap, I tried to stay off my leg. I read.  I realized I have so very few pictures from yesterday when writing my blog.  Cory went shopping and got some felting needles they needed at the quilt store. Captain stopped by Turner’s and got me this really nice porcelain dish with the Strawberry Lighthouse on it to keep my watch safe at night. It was very thoughtful.

The wind what we were supposed to get last night didn’t really come overnight but as the day progressed it turned truly wicked. We had thought we had seen the worse of the currents here but those look like child’s play right now.  We are pinned to our wall.  Great, we are secure, but we sure as heck aren’t going anywhere as there no way we could out power the current with our full-length keel.  I know it is hard to explain to anyone who doesn’t quite understand how boats work; you will just have to trust me. The current has turned into full on rapids, we can see white water and eddies that are intimidating. We watched a powerboat come in with only one of his two engines. The other blowing black smoke as he used all he could to safely bring her to the dock after about 5 approaches.  He did a phenomenal job in a difficult situation.

Playfair, a 72 foot brigantine came into the docks early in the morning.  This is a training vessel for youth that is frequently seen in these waters.  Besides the Captain, Christine, everyone is 18 years or younger.  We met Christine in years past and she had given us a tour of the boat. Our two boats being the only ones with wood masts gives us a bit a of comradery.  The kids today got to get a lot of loving from Kona and we helped them gather items for a scavenger hunt while they were on land. I learned later the hunt serves two purposes…to let the older crew have about an hour off while the younger ones are busy and to gather needed items on board.  Points for a bucket!  Points for earplugs for the cook!  Etc.  We were able to help out a little with the earplugs at least! Christine came over late afternoon.  They were not scheduled to stay the night but the weather for their crossing back home was not feasible overnight. We invited her aboard and chatted a long time about the program.  They have “trainees” that join them in the summer about 10 days at a time and the crew stay on the boat all summer. Christine invited Cory to join them next year just for the experience.  Cory had missed the tour last year so they all went (I stayed behind to rest my leg) to go have another tour.  The living situation is way different the Ciara and I think Cory got to see how luxurious we have it on our own boat.  They also got to see their massive kitchen that feeds 30 people and may have been convinced that the experience might be something they’d like to do next summer.  We fully support this….if they want.

We went out to dinner again. I made the mistake of just walking gently to the Anchor Inn; my arm hurting too much for the cane. I should have taken my scooter as by the end of the night my knee was hurting more then it had since before Frankin-brace.  Everyone at the diner remembered us and enjoyed our story about descending upon the Amazon delivery driver to intercept our packages.

We made it back to Ciara just in time for Last Post. I played for the wind tonight as I’m sure just about no one heard me, and that is okay. We decided to stay all day Wednesday as this wind and current aren’t going away.

Some new friends (I apologize, the names fleeted from my head because I didn’t write them down) who we met came over. They had tried to get her for Last Post but missed it. We joked that I was going to be timely even though they had hoped I would be late.  They are sailors who are taking a charter on a power boat to see if they like it.  We invited them aboard to chat and get out of the wind. They hung out for a while chatting about Freeze-Drying and pickles and random other fun things before we all said goodnight.   Kona didn’t get a late night walk as the wind had pushed our bow to the dock so much that the stern exit was now more of a leap of faith and it wasn’t worth it.  I am hopeful my new brace will be more comfortable to sleep in, but if I’m honest with myself it is hurting more tonight then the last two nights.
